Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNPs) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNPs) professions have many responsibilities including providing a holistic approach to diagnosis diseases. They meet the needs of their patients by providing the best care, physical assessments, and providing appropriate education to the patient and family members. Both nursing professionals can diagnosis diseases, treat disease, and writes prescriptions. The jobs of these professions required collaboration with primary care physician. Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty As I mentioned in my previous assignment, I have been working on neurology and cardiology unit. Despite my love for the neurology and cardiology area, I became more
interested in the working in a primary care setting. Being that most of the patients in the neurology unit suffer from mental issues, I chose to specialize in psychiatry because of my interest and passion of working with patients suffering from mental health problem. Beyond that, I came to this decision simply because I realized that it is challenging for primary care physicians to take on the role of caring for everyone. According to Walden University Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)-Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, there is a growing need of mental health care services, however there are not enough professionals who specialize in the field to meet this demand. This is why I chose to specialize in psychiatry Step 3: Professional Organizations The professional organization that related to my nursing specialty is American Psychiatric Nurses Association. This organization provides resources to support psychiatric nurse practitioner such as free CE, nursing journals, mentorship, annual conferences, council, and online blogs (American psychiatric nurse Association, n.d). Currently, I am not a member but very soon I will join the member. To join the organization, on American Psychiatric Nurses Association’s website simply click on membership then click on join today and follow instruction.
