search and rescue, medical evaluation and command and control. ix. During the 1970s, the development of the AH-64 Apache and UH-60 Blackhawk were based on lessons that were learned from the Vietnam War. x. The Sikorsky CH-53 Super Stallion became one of the world’s largest heavy lift helicopters. The Sikorsky S-92 and Bell Jet Ranger become the standard for commercial helicopter transport. Also there were helicopters operating worldwide providing disaster relief, medical evacuation, firefighting, news gatherings and combat operations. Now that you are familiar with the history of the history of helicopters in combat, we can move on to the significance of helicopters on today’s society.. b. Helicopters in today’s society. i. Helicopters are the preferred means of getting around. In the areas places they travel the infrasture has suffered from years of war and neglect which means air support is quicker and safer. This is one reason why helicopters are so valuable. ii. Helicopters provide versatility. They get troops into a location or out of a location quickly and safely. iii. They can provide flexible fire power and linger longer than jets. iv. Some areas of combat are not good for helicopters due to it being so hot and a higher altitude. Landing is also dangerous due to it being dusty and hazardous (Brownouts) for pilots and engines. Also snow (whiteouts) can be very dangerous for pilots to land as well.
Although learning the basics on helicopters is useful, this information is useless without knowing what we can expect in the future from the makers of helicopters. c. The society can expect great things from the makers of helicopters in the future. i. Society can expect the Army to continue to upgrade its Blackhawk, Chinook and Apache helicopters.
