Stalin comes to power after Lenin & Nazi propaganda showing that communists didn’t want anything besides spread to the world This is in Marxist ideology, but wasn’t 100% true – Marx felt that communism should dominate, but Stalin didn’t intend to do that completely Britain & France would do almost anything to avoid another conflict; The British thought that Germany was treated too harshly The French with the largest army, refused to play an offensive war The US stood away from conflicts, b/c they had their own problems Policy called for appeasement: if they give some concessions, Germany will be happy and Hitler will be happy ; Hitler kept complaining about how unfair the Treaty was They thought Hitler was the best defense against the USSR; he needed a strong army Under the Versailles treaty, Hitler was limited to 100,000 soldiers & couldn’t have a lot of military technology (heavy artillery); building up an air force; Hitler stops listening to treaty; France protested Rhineland : clear violation of the Treaty of Versailles British & French took no action; 22,000 German soldiers around the French border – nobody’s offering them aid (British won’t) – French opinion was opposed with Hitler – France saw it as a security threat – thought German forces were stronger than they were Spanish Civil War
