wash your hands with soap and water after handling the eggs (and in between each measurement during the experiment to prevent cross-contamination). 1. Place the 5 eggs in a container with a lid that is large enough to hold the eggs, cover with the eggs by filling the container with white vinegar. Let the eggs sit in the vinegar for 24 hours. *Ultimately, you will only need 3 eggs, but because accidents happen, we are decalcifying 5. ? 2. Gently holding the eggs in the container, pour out the old vinegar. Replace with fresh vinegar, and let sit in the refrigerator for another 24 hours. Repeat this process until the shells are fully dissolved, and only the membrane remains. This should take about 2-3 days. 3. Gently remove the eggs using the slotted spoon and rinse with tap water in the sink. 4. Gently put the shell-less eggs aside for a moment on a plate. Get your string and using the string and a ruler, measure the circumference of each egg at its widest spot. Record this measurement for each egg (and keep track of which egg!) in the chart below. 5. Prepare three different sugar-water solutions as follows, labeling with sticky notes: o Glass 1: Label "hypertonic." Pour in one cup of corn syrup. o Glass 2: Label "isotonic." Add 1 ½ tablespoon corn syrup to the one cup measuring cup, and fill the remainder with distilled water. Stir very well. Pour into a glass (make sure you get all the corn syrup out!) and stir to
dissolve.oGlass 3: Label "hypotonic." Pour in one cup of distilled water.oGentlyput one shell-less egg in each of the glasses, and let sit in therefrigerator for another 24 hours. In the area below, formulate a hypothesis: What do you think will happen to each of the four eggs placed into the different treatments? 6.After the 24 hours, gently remove each egg from its glass and use a piece of string and a ruler to measure the circumference of each egg. According to the data, which egg showed the greatest change in circumferenceover the 24 hours? Why? Explain fully below. SOLUTE CHARACTERISTICS and DIFFUSION Examine the images below and answer the associated questions. In this image a purple dye called Potassium Permanganate has been added to a petri dish with water and has been allowed to sit for 5 minutes:
