Dietary specialists are available as well as a well-equipped cafeteria. Residents, all veterans, are offered three nutritious meals, snacks, assistance with setting and reaching nutritional goals and weight management. Residents are even provided a packed lunch if they are out of the facility during mealtimes. Many residents volunteer for community and service organizations. Others also attend school or are gainfully employed, with the goal of regaining independence. The facility also has a recreation supervisor and five recreation specialists. Their goal is to plan events that encourage participation, social interaction, and self-improvement for the residents. A library is also on the grounds in an effort to facilitate learning. These services help take a burden off of the community and provides solace and camaraderie for like individuals. Veterans can receive emergency medical services at the VAMC regardless of their ability to pay. The Huntington VA is an asset to the community in other ways as well. Being one of the largest employers in the community, not just for veterans but non-veterans as well, it is vital to the economy. Without the services provided by the Huntington VA, the community could experience an increased rate of homelessness, increased suicide rates, increased resource utilization, and potentially increases criminal activity.
