a) What did President Johnson want to accomplish with this speech? President Johnson’s main purpose for informing the american citizens of the events during the Tonkin incident is to receive permission from “the Congress to pass a resolution making it clear that our Government is united in its determination to take all necessary measures in support of freedom and in defense of peace in southeast Asia.” In other words, we want more control over the military to strengthen the push against the spread of communism. b) What words or phrases were used to persuade his audience? Johnson made sure to make the events in the Gulf of Tonkin seem as aggressive as and making it clear that the Vietnamese gave the “initial act of aggression”. He made sure to include that “this new act of aggression” was “directed at our own forces.” He made sure that the United States needs to take action “immediately”. Johnson makes sure to make the American people feel safer and support him more by constantly mentioning the endless strengths of the United States. He refers to UNited State’s strength as “vast and awesome” and he makes sures to direct all of his efforts in support of peace. Multiple times does he refer that he want “our Government [to be] united in its determination to take all necessary measures in support of freedom and in defense of peace in southeast Asia.” His last words in the speech is even “Its mission is peace”, referring to the firmness of the military actions. c) How do you think Americans opinions about war with Vietnam changed because of this speech? As stated above I believe that through this speech Johnson was able to blame North Vietnam for the attack and to get the Americans to support his plan of enhancing the military intervention with the situation in Southeast Asia. It also makes Americans more confident in the united United States that all stand along this fight for peace. 3) Compare the Source to Other Accounts of the Event: a) What facts and evidence can you find to support or disprove specific claims made in President Johnson’s speech?
