Controlling is essentially quality checking – keeping score by measuring progress against performance standards that have been set. The most important function of controlling is risk reduction (Anastasia, 2017). Since you are monitoring the progress of the team against the goals, problems can be seen earlier and adjustments can be made. An example of this might be a company manufacturing a new product. They monitor daily progress so they know if the manufacturing lines are efficient and if production is keeping up with customer demand and can easily increase or decrease manufacturing as needed so they don’t keep too much inventory in stock. The steps of controlling are to establish standards, measure performance against the standards, and take corrective action (Anastasia, 2017). All five functions of management are intertwined and are all critical to the success of a business. Each function should be followed in order and sometimes concurrently. Great managers know how to plan, organize, staff, direct, and control, while inspiring and motivating their teams along the way. Each of these functions are important at all levels of management, from the top level executives all the way to entry level positions. Knowing and understanding each of these functions are critical to success as a manager.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
