These are words of action and purpose. And
her purpose is to rattle and stir people until they are as angry as her; angry enough to
act. In her closing comments she challenges us with, “The only question left to be
settled now is: Are women persons?” Who would not be provoked by this question?
Whether you are for or against the statement, it is inflammatory. It inspires action within
the human heart. It is a rally cry for justice and equality.
To overcome and correct injustices against human rights, action is required, often action
on a grand scale. Powerful and moving words are needed to move people on a grand
scale. But these words cannot just be moving and emotional. They must ask for action,
even demand it. This is not accomplished with words that draw upon our sorrow. That
only promotes hopelessness and despair, and smothers the flames of action. What are

needed are words that bestir our anger and indignation, words of action and hope. This
is the fuel for the machine of change.
