Even though Locke emphasizes these essential rights, he points out that they must be sacrificed for the good of the people. “But though men, when they enter into society, give up the equality, liberty, and executive powers they had in the state of nature, into the hands of the society, to be so far disposed of by the legislative, as the good of the society shall require.” 7 The government, controlled by the most reasonable men will serve as the moral compass. The laws will be reasonably set and enforced. Locke’s understanding of human nature immensely shapes the structure of his ideal government and order of politics.
