It was President Lincoln who violated their rights by forcing them (by use of the military and the draft) to stay in a country that had values that they were not comfortable with. Also I have some beliefs similar to the Radicals, that they believed inequal rights for African Americans and the end of slavery. But that doesn’t mean it was right to try to punish the Southerners for the war that wasn’t entirely their fault, and with the amount of devastation that came about from all of the battles that happened on Confederate soil, I believe they got more than their share of punishment from the war by itself.
