Leininger’s sunrise model was created to aid nurses in performing a comprehensive cultural assessment. The model includes cultural values, languages, and environmental contexts that are consistent with the patient. Assumptions of this theory are that caring is a universal bit translated differently among cultures. Culturally based care is the most particularistic means to know, interpret, and predict beneficial congruent care practices. (Leininger, 2002) This theory is complex, but yet it is specific to the cultural needs of the patient. It is easily applied to various cultural settings in nursing. Nursing has benefited from this theory as it has brought attention to the communication barrier related to cultural diversity in the healthcare field. This theory does not require further development and refinement, as this theory applies tothe cultural aspect of nursing — the increasing cultural diversity and demographics in healthcare warrants the need for a culturally congruent environment.
