2.2 Hardware Approach Before the project could be done, it is important to understand the operation of the hardware, the GBoard microcontroller, relay, and sensors that related to the Smart Grow system for greenhouse had been done and discussed as follow.

7 2.2.1 GBoard Module GBoard is a Arduino based microcontroller with ATMega328P controller which features a SIM900 GSM/GPRS module, an XBee socket, and nRF24L01 with module interface as connectivity project. This development board could be used for anything from greenhouse automation to robot control. GBoard GSM/GPRS/Wireless development platform based on Arduino is shown in Figure 2.1. Figure 2.1: GBoard (Arduino Compatible SIM900 GSM/GPRS Board) In this project, GBoard was choosed because it offering a combination of Arduino microntroller (ATMega328P) with SIM900 GSM hardware for wireless communication with unlimited range support unlike any other wireless communication. GBoard main advantage is in term of very wide range coverable which is since the cellular network is exist, the communication can be established. The other advantages is it support wide range power supply, power saving design technique, easy to used for a quick prototyping, programmable general purpose input and output (GPIO), and serial peripheral interface (SPI) and inter-integrated circuit (IIC) interfaces will give the flexibility to develop customized applications [26].

8 Figure 2.2 showed the Arduino ATMega328P surface mount device (SMD) microcontroller. It been attached to the GBoard as main controller for this project and provide the communication interface between SIM900 module and the develop applications. 9 2.2.2 Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) In order to control many appliances such as fan, mist maker, and super bright LED light, the current consumption need to be high. The switch mode power supply was used to obtain high current supply so that the function of appliances used in this project can be maximized. Besides the high output current, this type of power supply was choosen because it power conversion with minimal losses can be achieved. Precise output voltage is possible and the size of switch mode power supply is compact [10]. It also comes with short circuit, overload, and over voltage protection. Figure 2.3 shows the SMPS that is used to supply power for this project and the specifications are listed in Table 2.1 [11]. 10 2.2.3 Soil Moisture Sensor In the research by Jeff Iles [2], the soil status is the most crucial need for the growth of plant since there are no organic process occurs in the absence of water. The sensor used to measure the moisture content, m.c. and this will be discuss in the next section. The Figure 2.4 is the resistive soil moisture sensor [12].
