2.7.6Where hazardous waste is produced, any specific legalor regulatory requirements associated with that type ofwaste shall be complied with.2.7.7Where possible, in-process recycling (such as regrind)shall be established and maintained to minimisewastage of raw materials or intermediate products.Where in-process recycling is not possible, the use ofwaste in other or alternative products, both in-house orwith external sites, shall be evaluated and implementedif appropriate.2.7.8Spill waste shall be dealt with according to locallegislative requirements, with special reference tohazardous waste (and shall include excess pest controlmaterials).2.7.9The company shall ensure that waste or surplus pestcontrol materials are managed effectively to minimiseor eliminate hazards to the environment.2.7.10Where possible, any and all pests killed by ingestion oftoxic materials, traps or any other pest control methodshall be disposed of to minimise the risk ofcontamination to the environment.2.7.11Chemicals including cleaning materials, lubricants andadhesives shall be purchased, used, stored and disposedof in a manner that complies with the company’senvironmental and waste management objectives.2.8Land UseSOIThe use of land and the potential impact on the localenvironment shall be with consideration to thecompany’s environmental policy and objectives.2.8.1Where new buildings are being commissioned, thecompany shall ensure that the build process does notcause negative impact on the local environment, andthe buildings shall comply with the company’senvironmental policy, objectives and local legalrequirements.Where relevant, consideration shall be made for use ofsustainable building schemes that incorporate the useof sustainable design and renewable energy, such asBREEAM (Building Research EstablishmentEnvironmental Assessment Method).2.8.2The purchase, installation and commissioning ofequipment, and the movement or decommissioning ofold equipment or facilities, shall be conducted withconsideration of the company’s environmental policy.2.9NuisanceSOIThe site shall take steps to minimise risk of nuisance.2.9.1A documented assessment of the site’s interaction withits local environment and the potential negative impactsP541: AVM – Environmental Awareness Module (EAM) auditor checklistBRC Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials, Issue 5Issue 1: December 2015Page9of16
