6)When communicating, both verbally and non-verbally, how can you show respect to people from diverse backgrounds? 7) Suggest 2 strategies that will develop effective relationships with educators and clients including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Include any resources or services that could assist you in this area. Two strategies that will develop effective relationships between educators and clients that may be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin are: Placing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, artwork, signage and other visual cues around the centre. This will communicate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders that the services are culturally safe and welcoming, and a place that they can enter without discomfort Using some words and phrases from their language. Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders do not use standard Australian English as their first language. Educators must be aware that many people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent need lots of time to process information and respond; they may feel undue pressure if the educator is uncomfortable with a long period of silence or repeats themselves for fear they have not been understood. 8)How could you create a culture of appreciation and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities in an Early Childhood setting? Ensure you include in your response consideration of children, families and educators as well as the community.
