Study unit 3 21 3.1 PHYLUM PORIFERA On completion of this study section you should be able to: Give the general characteristics of the Porifera. Distinguish between the structure of asconid (or simple) and syconid (or complex) sponges. Name, describe and give the functions and organisation of the different cell types. Critically evaluate the ecological importance of the Porifera (such as its interactions with other organisms and role in maintaining healthy ecosystems) and the dangers posed by habitat destruction (such as deep-sea trawling) to this group of organisms. Describe the structure, habitat, feeding and reproduction of sponges in general. Sources Prescribed sources: Mader and Windelspecht p. 527 Appendix 1 Introductory remarks The phylum Porifera represents the aquatic sponges, the simplest of all multicellular animals The adults are sessile, sac-like filter feeders while their larvae are free-swimming. Their bodies represent an assembly of cells in an extra cellular gelatinous matrix in which skeletal elements such as spicules (made of silica or calcium carbonate) and spongin occur. Unique cells are found in these organisms: Flagellated choanocytes (or collar cells), pinacocytes (forming the outer layer), archaeocytes (wandering amoeboid cells found in
