As for now, soft contact lenses and gas permeable contact lenses sales are expected to increase while those of hard ones decline. Recent introduction of extended wear gas permeable lenses insinuates that in the short run, we will achieve a hybrid version of the two prevalent lenses that have all positive characteristics while eliminate bad ones. SOCIETAL AND ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS Despite having become more popular, contact lenses still have their complications as stated above. Customers should not be allowed to arbitrarily purchase any contact lenses they
want because they may suffer from diseases. They should be advised by opticians of which to buy and how to use effectively, in order to avoid any negative implications. As a result, people are worried about a scenario in which opticians/ prescribers give prescription not for patients’ good but for their purpose. Or a situation in which sellers entice people to purchase their products without any valid prescription. Therefore, there must be a code of conduct for seller and prescribers to give customers certain rights as well as impose duties on those two parties. In July 2004, the Federal Trade Commission issued the Contact lens rule to demonstrate the duties of each party. As for prescribers, they must give a copy of the contact lens prescription to the patient at the end of the contact lens fitting no matter if that person does not inquire. They must provide or verify the contact lens prescription to anyone who is designated to act on behalf of the patient, including contact lens sellers. Also, they must rectify any inaccuracy in the prescription as well as inform the seller if it expires. On the other hand, they are not allowed to oblige patients to buy contact lenses or sign a waiver or release in exchange for a copy of the prescription. As for sellers, they must demand a legitimate prescription from buyers. Besides, they can verify the prescription by direct communication with the prescriber. CONCLUSION From Leonardo Da Vinci’s glass lens to nowadays abundant types of contact lens, there is no doubt that the contact lens industry has made remarkable improvements throughout the history of 200 years since the advent of the official invention. While their benefits are immense, we have to take into account the undeniable complications that contact lenses cause so that we can upgrade our contact lenses to get rid of these negative consequences. Since the technology boom era doesn’t show a sign of slowing down anytime
soon, there is a firm and possible hope of even more amazing contact lenses will be created to make people’s lives better.
