3. What do you feel you have accomplished through the writing of novels such as Things Fall Apart and Anthills of the Savannah , that gave a different picture of African culture and chastised the British form of government introduced to the African people? After you and your partner are satisfied with your interview questions, it is time to conduct your interview. Since you will not be able to interview Chinua Achebe, you will need to consult web sites and other research materials to come up with answers to your questions. You may find that during the course of your search, new questions are raised and answered, or that old questions are altered or replaced. Do not be afraid to include these in your final product. Once you feel that all of your questions have been answered, you should work with your partner to write an article based on the interview. You may write the article in magazine or newspaper form, with short, succinct paragraphs, or you may use a question/answer approach, where the question is written down and then the interviewee’s response is given. Your answers will need to sound as though you were Chinua Achebe answering a question. Be creative! Note to Teacher: This could be an excellent opportunity to teach students the differences between summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation, as well as citing research sources.

As with any interview, avoid questions that require a simple “yes” or “no” answer; ask questions that will get your subject thinking and talking. Sample Questions: 1. Was there any specific circumstance that motivated you to write Things Fall Apart ? If so, can you explain? 2. Things Fall Apart was one of the first books to present European colonialism from an African point of view and to express‚ in English‚ the way Africans spoke in their native tongues. What effect do you feel this had on the direction of African literature? 3.
