Background/history: During the time mary as god bearer is called into question  Tension growing btw holy roman emperor and pope  5 th  century, rome sacked more than once  -trabeated ionic columns (espolia), long apse, windows in clerestory on both  sides to allow for mosaic work to be visible from ground (LIGHT), coffered ceilings later -political statement: no long transepts, not for pilgrims, to honor mary  mosaic cycle also promotes the church/the papacy (they are being attacked  on all sides) o along nave= complicated OT stories that  link the church directly to  the patriarchs of the OT  (parting of the red sea, spies returning from  Canaan and rebellion against Moses with hand of God protecting  them),  emphasizing the miraculous  (430) o stories all typological, referring back to Christ (so similar stories you  see in catacombs) o mosaic story: Abraham and Melchizedek: Abraham=patriarch coming  out of battles to meet high priest of jews; everyone UNITED (bread and  wine vase and Christ swooping in- central axis, lineage of abraham to  Christ (CHRIST as new moses), spatial link of eucharist to depiction  (closest to altar)) o OT  in nave (history of jewish people) and Christ thought as having  descended from line of David (fuse OT and NT)   infancy of Christ  (annunciation, nativity) above triumphal arch in apse, establishing  Christ as messiah and new moses Christ and moses both in center (look at images from different  mosaics and compare) Images on two sides of arch: Depiction of Jerusalem bejeweled  with 6 lambs underneath and Bethlehem on other side
