Career Advancementrefers to selection and promotion based on the members qualificationand performance based on merit. The management and workers at Ram Sami & Sons (Fiji)Ltd are selected for their skills in the respective area of work. The employees are technicallycompetent to carry out their respective roles and responsibilities. Qualification andexperience are paramount in RSSFL however if the performance and job history of apotential candidate is outstanding then they are given priority over the more qualifiedcandidates. In RSSFL if a position is vacant instead of immediately advertising and hiringexternally, they prefer to seek employees with capabilities internally. There are performancereviews done every 3 months and if performance is excellent then there is room forpromotion.Question 2Centralised and Decentralised structures refer to the level to delegation of decision-makingpowers within a company. In Ram Sami & Sons (Fiji) Ltd there are multiple levels of authority. There are severaldepartments which are all managed by their respective managers. Each manager is solelyresponsible for their subordinates and the day to day operations of their departments.Managers have the power vested in them to make the decisions regarding the day to dayroutine tasks and operations however decisions pertaining to anything apart from routine askhas to be consulted with the managing director. RSSFL can be classified as a centralisedorganization since majority of the decisions are made by the managing director. It howevercan be also be classified as a decentralised organization to some extent as managers areallowed to make certain decisions. For example, whenever there are any recruitmentsconducted by the company, the HR Officers has the authority to interview candidates whichare then narrowed done to by the HR Manager. The HR Manager then shortlists thecandidates and sends the report to the Managing Director, wo then makes the ultimatedecision. As shown in the organizational structure below, RSSFL has both the narrow span ofcontrol and a wide span of control. Depending on the department, example the HR Mangerhas a narrow span of control as there only 3 subordinates reporting to him whereas theoperations manager has a wide span of control as there are multiple subordinates workingunder him.Ram Sami & Sons Fiji Ltd Organizational Structure12 |P a g e
