This sep-arateness can feel like :freedomandindependencewhenweareinagoodmood.Butwhenweareintrouble, lonelyorangry,underpressureordissatisfied,thisseparateness feels like isolation, alienation, unfair treatment,ordeprivation.Whenweare wholly grippedbyfury, the searing energy that wants to attack atarget picksour"I"up like a mindless toolandflingsusattheotherperson.Itisso disconnected thatiteven disregardsoursenseofself-protection, making ustake actions that injure us, ignore injuries undergone,andevenharmotherswithnoregard for the consequences.Thereisnomorepowerful demonstrationofourstrong senseofbeing an independent entitythanwhenwegive ourselvesover completely to anger.Whenwelookaroundatothers,weseethattheyarejustasalienated fromusasweare alienatedfromthem.Aswewantthingsfromthem,theywantthings from us.Aswereject them,theyseemto reject us.Wedon'tlovethem, sohowcanweexpectthemto loveus?Andyettheyare endless,while"I"amjustone. So Iambadlyoutnumbered.I feel threatened. I cannevergetenough,haveenough,orbeenough.I will inevitably losetheme-versus-all-of-them struggleinthelongrun.Wecan,ofcourse, experiencemomentsofunitywithotherbeings,throughfallinginlove,orhaving a child, for example.Whenwedo,weexperiencetre-mendousrelj.ef-foramoment,there aretwoofus teamedupagainst alltheothers together.Wehave an ally.Butunfortunately those moments aretoorare,andtheydonotlastlongbeforetheold self-isolation re-emerges.Evenlovers cantumintoadversaries, couplesoftenseek divorce,andchildren recoilfrom their parents,whointurnreject them.This alienation causedbythe presumed independent, absolute self waswhytheBuddhasaw its illusionasthe sourceofhumansuffering.Thesituationoffeeling that it's always"theself versus the world,"withthe selfasthelong-termloser,isunsatisfactory and untenable.Whenwerecognizetheinevitablenonviabilityofourself-centered reality,itmotivates us to engageinthe questforthetrue natureofthesel£Itmakesitexistentially essential for us to pause

Still,wecannotmerelyaccept someoneelse's report.Nooneelsecandothejobofreplacing misunderstanding withunderstanding for us.Wemustlookatrealityandverify for ourselveswhetherourhabitual senseofhavinga fixed selfortheBuddha's discoveryofselflessnessisultimately true.Inthis way,wecanbegintotransformtheself-preoccupationthatcauses chronic sufferingintothe insightful, gradual openingandletting gooftheselfthatis,paradoxically, so self-fulfilling.
