Teacher’s Page Things Fall Apart Chapters 14-19 Music and Mood Objective : Understanding the importance of mood Activity For most award-winning films, there is an award-winning soundtrack. Movie producers recognize the importance of creating a mood in the audience that ultimately heightens plot and enables the viewer to understand the film-maker’s attitude and intention. The tool of choice to create this mood is music. This universal language can soothe, excite, interpret, frighten, and disquiet the listener. Select appropriate background music for each chapter in Part Two that reflects Achebe’s attitude and creates the mood he intends for the audience. Explain your choice of music and how each piece fits the mood of the chapter. Include the title and composer/writer of each selection. Note to Teacher: You may instruct your students on the types of music allowed, if necessary. Some teachers may prefer strictly classical or accompaniment pieces. However, given some freedom, students may select time-appropriate pieces‚ such as rap‚ that include the themes presented in the novel. You may want to tell the students that all music is subject to approval. You may also allow students to bring their music selections to share with the class. This activity could be adapted to any section of the novel.
