and head home. There are instances of conversation around the coffee machines, but those are the exception rather than the rule.” • “The firm culture is great. It is professional, but collegial.” • “While McGuireWoods continues to have somewhat of an ‘old boys network’ feel, there is an active women’s group that gets together for happy hours or other social events about once a month, which presents a nice opportunity to meet female attorneys from other practice groups.” Associate/Partner Relations • “We staff deals lean, so you work with partners without many, if any, layers between associates and partners. Regarding transparency, I have no idea how raises are determined, and aside from non-discretionary bonuses for hitting hours, I have no idea how discretionary bonuses are decided. Still, we have yearly performance reviews which I find are candid discussions about what is going right and what could be going better.” • “Many individual partners are great, but firm management is opaque. Important policies are not widely known/discussed (e.g., many associates do not know how compensation is set) and formal firm announcements do not seem particularly candid.” • “Being outside our main offices (Charlotte, Richmond, and Chicago) does make me feel a little out of the loop. I often hear about major firm occurrences through off-hand gossip rather than through more controlled means. The more controlled announcements often seem purposefully vague and incomplete, such that I’m left guessing at the real meaning.” • “The firm as a whole is not that transparent. However, partners in my department do a great job of communicating.”

Face-time, especially for newer associates, is required from 9-5. Even still, associates generally have the ability to adjust their schedules as necessary. Older associates can apply to work on flex-hours.” • “In practice, there is little requirement for face-time. Work distribution can be arbitrary (particularly across offices), with some associates swamped and others slow for years.” • “Hours are good but there could be more transparency in how work is distributed.” • “No expectation to hit way over 2,000 hours; no one cares if you are in the office as long as you are available and get your work done.” Compensation • “Bonuses are almost entirely hours based with tiers, but small by industry standards (e.g., first tier bonus is less than one two-week paycheck). The compensation gap in large markets compared to top-of-market firms is significant (50k+ for senior associates). In practice, low compensation is made up for by fewer hours (rare to have associates billing more than 2200-2300 hours), but lower hours are neither official firm policy or guaranteed, so people who get swamped end up losing out.”

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
