4. Political realism is aware of the moral significance of political action. It is also aware of ineluctable tension between the moral command and the requirements of successful political action. a. Carr views of economic might and political power (Pg48) The realist critique of the harmony of interests - the doctrine of the harmony of interests thus serves as an ingenious moral device invoked in perfect sincerity, by privileged groups in order to justify and maintain their dominant position - the overwhelming power of the privileged group and is an excellent illustration of the Machiavellian maxim that morality is the product of power. 9. Realism: “classical” and “structural” - Classical realist locate the roots of international conflict and war in an imperfect human nature while neo-realists maintain that its deep causes are found in the anarchic international system. The state is ontologically superior to the system in classical realism, in contrast to neorealism, allowing more space for agency in the former approach. Third, classical realists differentiate between status-quo powers and revisionist powers while neorealism regards states as unitary actor. - Neorealist states seek security, rather than power, according to the existing international order. 10.
