The supervisor provides guidance to the students for resubmissionvia email.A pass mark must be achieved at the second submission if the student is to continue tothe dissertation stage.6.1 Changing Topic at the Dissertation PhaseEach supervisor has a group of between 10 and 12 students who will use their ResearchLSC / STM MBA Dissertation Handbook11.02.08- 7 -
Methods proposal as the basis for their dissertation.Students not achieving a passmark in their proposal will not be allowed to progress to the dissertation stage. The student must carry out the project as specified in the Research Proposal submittedin Semester 2 except for minor modifications agreed with the Supervisor as the researchdevelops. This is because the proposal is assessed at the end of Semester 2 and a passmark awarded if it is deemed a viable topic for an MBA dissertation. If a student wishesto change their topic they must write a new Research Proposal and this must beapproved by the Course Leader. They would be required to pay a‘resit’fee as it wouldbe classed as a resubmission, and must then start their dissertation again in thefollowing semester with full attendance at the dissertation seminars.7. THE DISSERTATION SEMINARSThe first 9 seminars and individual student-supervisor meetings are scheduled for thefirst 9 weeks of the third semester. Each session is of three hours duration. Attendanceat these sessions iscompulsoryand a prerequisite for submission of a dissertation.Attendance is monitored by means of the standard attendance register currently in usefor all other courses. The final (10th) dissertation seminar is scheduled 2 weeks before the submissiondeadline and students are expected to provide a full draft of their dissertation for reviewat this point before the final submission. The first hour of the Dissertation Seminar should focus on discussing issues ofcommon interest to the supervisory group (e.g. How to carry out and present theliterature survey, how to present tables) and permit each student to present theirresearch progress.A presentation and report should be made every two or threeweeks. This enables supervisors to monitor progress, provide objectives andmotivation for students and minimise the risk of plagiarism. It will also create afeeling of group cohesion, keep them aware of the progress of others.
