C489 Task 3 The US uses a hybrid healthcare system that shares the burden of healthcare costs between the government, employers, and the individual. In 2014 the United States enacted the affordable healthcare act to allow Americans access to affordable quality healthcare. Both state and federally administered health insurance marketplaces were established to provide additional access to private insurance coverage, with income-based premium subsidies for low- and middle- income people. (The commonwealth fund, nd). As of 2016, there are over 27.3 million uninsured people in the US. The average monthly cost for healthcare premiums in the US is $89.00 and many people weather unemployed or retired with a decreased income can t afford it. To help this population, there are federally and states funded programs. Medicare is a federally funded program that provides coverage to people over 65 and those with disabilities. Medicaid is a federally funded program that provides healthcare for those who are considered below poverty level. Because many adults do not have healthcare coverage, many children also do not. CHIP, State Children s Health Insurance Program, provides insurance coverage to the uninsured children who do not qualify for Medicaid. According to The Commonwealth Fund, n.d., In 2015 more than 10 million Americans were both entitled to Medicare and eligible for Medicaid services (the so-called dual eligibles). CHIP covered more than 8.1 million children in low-income families in 2015 . 2a. Medication Coverage In Switzerland, all medications that are prescribed by a physician are covered under their healthcare plans. Brand name medications require a copayment of 20% of the price, whereas generic medications require a copayment of 10% of the price.
