Because of the world keeps changing; changes have to be done within a company also. Now because of this; there are two theoretical approaches that help the company to have a more effective management styles. One of the styles to help with the organizational structure would be Leadership. For with leadership; it will help everyone with their performance in any company; not just GM. “Leading managers make all the major decisions in terms of what the company’s purpose and goal is, how employees are compensated and treated interpersonally, what products and/or services are
produced, who the targeted customers are, and how the product and/or service is delivered (Yuan & Lee, 2011).” By having this in a company; it helps “considers the human aspect of organizations; and as a result, it encourages good organizational cultures (Yuan & Lee, 2011).” Because GM had poor leadership; the company as a whole needs to try to focus more on their staff or learn how to improve the productivity if they notice something isn’t right. That is why it shows that when the ignition switch failed; the “staff just swept it under the rug and never told anyone what was going on (Schein, 2010).” I believe if there would have been more of a structure within GM; then the organization culture would be good and no one would neglect their responsibility in reporting a problem to anyone either in their department or management. Motivational Theory for GM With this case; I believe that this company failed by not applying the motivational theory with their employees. Because if the company would have been motivating the staff to work; then there wouldn’t be any issues with any of their car products and nothing would hurt their customer stratification with GM. Allowing a problem to go on for over 8 years or more; shows how the employees were not fully motivated and didn’t take their job seriously by not reporting any issues to their supervisors. With that being said; the actually problem doesn’t just lay with staff below management; but management failed also. By not allowing the management to make the right decisions or to uses different management approaches for different things; they could change what approach the company is currently using, and this will help the company in the long run and it will show a more positive work place.
Timeline for GM Improvements With any company; one can improve their issues and make sure that things get fixed. For GM; their company has a timeline to help continuing their growth and development. GM’s web site mentions that the first thing they want to improve is the quality systems by allowing them to “centralized computer software for testing equipment, creating process normality (General Motors, 2016).” The next improvement they mentioned was how they want to use a cloud database to help communicate around the world to other GM companies and suppliers that they are partnered up with.
