There is also a connection between depression and old age diseases. Research shows that most the illnesses and diseases the elderly face have a common symptom, which happens to be depression. Research shows that the elderly both male and females suffer different degrees of depression. Some suffer from severe depression, others moderate depression and others have mild or no depression symptoms (Nazemi et al, 2013). Research shows that the elderly suffer from both internal and external causes. The change in the environment and lifestyle contributes to the external causes while issues such as dissatisfaction with the staff service provision and poor quality of food contributes to some of the internal causes of depression among the elderly people in nursing homes.

ELDERLY AND DEPRESSION IN NURSING HOMES 5 Purpose Statement The purpose of this research is to show the suffering of the elderly that is contributed to by the depression moments they experience. The research determines whether there is presence of elderly depression in nursing homes, purposes to identify the main factors that contribute to the depression, focusing on both external and internal factors, and identifies some of the mitigation measures that can be used. This study seeks to report on important information concerning elderly depression based on extensive research and incredible sources. The elderly experience depression problems in nursing homes due to many factors. They exhibit suffering from the painful experiences they undergo in life (Drageset et al, 2015). The suffering is felt both mentally and emotionally therefore affecting the physical wellbeing of the person. Depression causes other emotional imbalances such as anxiety that comes from the traumatic incidents the elderly face in life. Some of the necessary ways to assist the elderly alleviate the suffering they undergo is providing social support. Social support encompasses many aspects but mostly involve socialization, interaction, and presence of human relationships. Therefore, it is important to encourage family members to regularly visit their elderly relatives to assist them not only emotionally, but also materially. This interaction and support boosts their self-esteem, making them feel accepted and a sense of love and appreciation[Jor15]. This in turn reduces the loneliness and the suffering they undergo both emotionally and physically.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
