For a few times now, the United States was on the hunt for information that could help the South Vietnamese front and on August 2nd they saw North Vietnamese patrols which they shot at at over the ordered distances and heavily damaged the vessels and left one vessel dead. On August 4th the Maddox was again on patrol and due to unclear visibility and other conditions fired almost 250 shells at nearby vessels that were previously recorded as North Vietnamese. In addition an aircraft was launched looking for enemy vessels. Commander Stockdale later reported that “there was nothing there but black water and American firepower” but there were no actual attacks. The “attacks”

that they suspected there would be were simply mistakes from the equipment during a poor weathered atmosphere. 4) Evaluate the Validity of the Account: a) Which parts of President Johnson’s speech are truthful? Which parts are not? Do you think Americans would have accepted a wider war with Vietnam if Johnson had given a more accurate speech? Why or why not? I find it difficult to believe that Americans would have accepted a wider war with Vietnam if they knew that the attack was actually on North Vietnam by the Americans and not the other way around. If the Americans knew that the only reason that North Vietnam sent torpedos on August 2nd was because the United States fired first and that there were no real attacks going to be made on the Maddox on August 4th and that it was just a false rader images the AMericans would negatively view their government and try to voice their opinions for not needing to start another war. I believe that Johnson was trying to gather the AMericans to support the anti-communist actions of united states and the easiest way of doing so is falsifying the mistaken actions and making it seem as self defence. This way Johnson was able to put a negative image on North Vietnam and bring together the government to enforce stricter military engagement in the area.

The destroyers and supporting aircraft acted at once on the orders I gave after the initial act of aggression. We believe at least
