regardless the fact that Emily is an heir of a family with high social standing, the family name cannot prevent her from paying taxes. Similarly, she commits a crime and loses her mind, yet she has an upper social status. In this regard, it is apparent that Faulkner applies these stylistic devices to reveal these social changes, and to criticize the class system in the society. The story indicates that stylistic devices are recipes for writing great fiction stories. Faulkner uses non-sequential flashback, and foreshadowing as the primary literary devices in his story. Evidently, the two styles help in creating tension, and suspense in the story making it more interesting. Great fictions require no chronology since this makes the story interesting as the reader must interpret various parts of the story to understand the setting, and themes being addressed in the story. Figurative language, irony, and imagery are also critical in crafting an exciting fiction story. From this reading, I have learned that a fiction story requires an appropriate blend of various literary devices to enable readers to develop a mental picture of the events taking place in a story. Similarly, the use of non-sequential flashback helps in creating tension, and suspense in the story, since this style helps the writer to break chronology making the story less predictable.
