Studies have shown that using developmental normal age ranges is a good way to monitor risks for developmental delays and that early bloomers have been shown to prosper in adulthood in things like intelligence and executive functions. Children should also hit appropriate milestones when it comes to weight and height as well because studies have shown that increased weight gain early in childhood can lead to adult obesity (Neelon, Oken, Taveras, Rifas-Shiman, & Gillman., 2011). Considering that obesity is on the rise in our country it is important to start monitoring by habits early in children. Studies have shown that 10% of the infants in the united states ages 0-23 months are categorized as obese (Neelon, Oken, Taveras, Rifas-Shiman, & Gillman., 2011).
