The Hay market Riot Happened in Chicago, workers there were working for Mcormic harvesting factory. Workers in this plant were on strike to get an eight hour day. Police move it to shut it down after a while. Someone through a pipe bomb into the crowed and it killed a police officer, so the police opened fire. No one knows who threw the bomb but in the aftermath of the event, some German immigrants and anarchists are arrested, tried and convicted. It is unclear who threw it though. German immigrants ,5 were executed by hanging. 1886. Labor unrest is linked with radical political philosophy, adds radicalism to strikes in the minds of Americans. Causes a greater sense of disorder. Very wealthy had their own rail cars. Pullman’s Palace car. Pullman’s company has a factory town. Live in Pullman company housing, grocery store, department store in Chicago. When 1893 depressions hits, the owner of the Pullman company decides to cut wages and people but doesn’t lower company housing. He won’t speak to his workers. Refuses to discuss anything about it. So they go on strike. They are able to get the national railroad union to agree to stop working on trains that have a Pullman’s car attach. Railroads come to a halt. It is very successful. Pullman looks for a way to end this and he turns to the president. President agrees that the strike needs to be put down. Says it is effecting delivery of the mail so federal forces are sent in.
