knowledge about the attitudes and sentiments of a given population essential for understanding quality of life.’ (White, 2014) Group E felt an online survey would be the most efficient form of data collection as it is delivered electronically, allows for instant aggregation and analysis of survey results and is very cost effective due to utilizing a free web-based survey engine, Survey Monkey. Another advantage to leveraging a web-based questionnaire is the ability to collect results anonymously. Many people consider political decisions private/personal in nature and may be reluctant to answering questions regarding politics in a face to face interview or in a group setting due to fear of judgement. Group interviews regarding hotly debated topics have potential to generate response bias/skewed data due to acquiescence; Acquiescence is ‘the tendency to be agreeable… acquiescence may be a result of lower cognitive skills or knowledge related to a concept or construct, language difficulties, or perceived level of anonymity.’ (Cooper, 2014) Leveraging an online survey to ensure respondent anonymity is an effective way to mitigate
Detailed Casual Research 4 response bias driven by acquiescence and obtain honest answers on a potentially personal topic. To distribute the survey, each member of Group E provided a URL Address (Uniform Resource Locator Address) across multiple social media platforms (Primarily Facebook) requesting anyone of voting age to take the survey along with a few short notes. Each note helped establish the survey parameters upfront and served its own respective purpose, illustrated in Table 1 . Table 1: Survey Notes & intended Goal - List of notes included with survey instructions to establish survey expectations with respondent before proceeding with questionnaire Descriptive Data Collected The descriptive data collected by the web-based questionnaire aimed to gather meaningful data from both voters and non-voters for further dissemination and review. The types of questions being asked should provide enough data to calculate and review frequencies, averages and has potential to determine correlations between particular variables; However, the primary goal of this data collection will not help determine the primary cause behind the behavior being studied but should provide some direction for the next round of research. In total, the web-based questionnaire is ten multiple choice questions asking the respondent characteristic based questions about themselves and behavioral based questions regarding their involvement in Survey Note / Instruction Intended Goal 1 Survey is for voters AND non-voters Establishes and qualifies target population 2 Survey is 100% anonymous Confirms Respondent Anonymity 3 Survey is 10 multiple choice questions Establishes level of effort required of respondent, people may be more willing to take a survey with a quick & easy user interface 4 Survey should take less than 2 minutes to complete Informs potential respondent of total time commitment, shorter surveys tend to get more results 5
