The Filipino people had been fighting for their independence from Spain for many years . They were very mad that the U.S. took over there country after the Spanish American War . The rebel leader Emilio Aguinaldo believed the U.S promise to give them independence after the war (we did promise and we lied) He felt betrayed by the U.S. after the Filipino people helped the U.S. defeat the Spanish . 1899 Aguinaldo begins a rebellion against the U.S. it lasted THREE YEARS THEY WOULD NOT SURRENDER(fought in the jungle) and they fought like hell against the mighty U.S. The U.S. won and started the same kind of government in The Philippines as in Cuba which was a protectorate . Controlling the Philippines gave the U.S. navy control of the Pacific Ocean jwhich is exactly what they wanted to control the Far East (we wanted China and Japan) Foreign Influence in China – What were the U.S. interests in China 1899 many countries had been trading with China . These countries were called “SPHERES OF INFLUENCE” (European countries trading in China) . America worried these spheres would cut off trade with China . Secretary of State John Hay sent notes to the other European powers proposing EQUAL TRADING RIGHTS FOR ALL COUNTRIES TRADING WITH CHINA THIS WAS CALLED THE OPEN DOOR POLICY . Hay wanted all Chinese ports to remain open and for China to remain INDEPENDENT . No country would have SPECIAL TRADING RIGHTS all the European powers agreed

. 1900 A secret Chinese society started a rebellion against the European powers and the U.S. . They did not want any FOREIGN INFLUENCE IN THEIR COUNTRY . All the countries trading with China sent troops- U.S. sent the most The rebellion was defeated . This was called the BOXER REBELLION The U.S. issued a warning to all other countries DO NOT TRY TO TAKE OVER CHINA .
