Activity #92Working withStar Chart*Star Chartworks in either portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) mode. When I hold up my smartphone to useStar Chart, I typically hold it in landscape mode. You can start familiarizing yourself withStar Chartduring the daytime. If you know where the Sun is in the sky (andunless the sky is totally overcast, the Sun is pretty easy to find), you can check that your smartphone andStar Chartareworking properly.Hold up your smartphone in landscape mode and point it in the direction of the Sun. You should see the digital Sun(along with constellations, stars, planets, and DSOs) appear on the screen. Note that a dashed light red line goesthrough the Sun. That line is the ecliptic. (The ecliptic is covered in Module 2, slides 22, 40, 41, and 55.) The Sunalways follows the ecliptic because it is a reflection of our orbit around the Sun. The Moon and planets always lie closeto the ecliptic and are therefore easy to spot.Along the horizon line, note the designation of the cardinal points that will also help orient you. These work inconjunction with your internal GPS. You can double check with the built-in compass app that many smartphoneshave.Setting the date and time: Hold your smartphone in portrait mode. The current time is displayed at the top right-handcorner of your smartphone screen. Tap the time and you will see several pieces of information across the top of thescreen:Now: Tap this and you will return to the current time.Day/Month/Year: Tap the day and it will be highlightedin red. Note that along the right-hand vertical edge, there will appear 31 numbers (one for each day of a month) withthe current date in white. To change the day, just slide until the date you want is highlighted in white. Next, tap on themonth at the top of your screen. It will then be highlighted in red, and a list of 12 numbers will be seen along thevertical right edge. The current month is shown. To set a different month, slide the numbers until the month you want ishighlighted in white. Tap the year (which will be 2014). It, too, will be highlighted in red. Change the year from the listalong the right vertical edge as you did for day and month. The last two numbers at the top of your screen representthe time.Hours/minutes: Tap the current hour and see it highlighted in red. Hours are given in military time from 023.
