Escalera 2 Furthermore, the movie which was directed by Steven Spielberg, won five awards, among them a Golden Globe and a Blue Ribbon Award. Spielberg created the movie to have a more serious tone by adding a few scenes where the characters sang unlike the musical. For example, when Shug Avery was singing at the bat. Furthermore, the movie also differs from the play by incorporating stronger language creating a heavier environment. The lighting of the scenes also contributed to set this tone. In summary, Walker fully portrayed the struggle of black women’s life during the twentieth century. Even though Norman and Spielberg added something different to the original work, both adaptations mirror perfectly Walker’s novel. On the other hand, one can still appreciate the similarities in both pieces making it impossible to lose focus of Walker’s main idea and moral.
