1. Define the term hermaphrodite. Describe an advantage to being hermaphroditic. How is cross- fertilization advantageous over asexual reproduction? Having both female and male sex organs. The advantage is that reproduction is possible without a mate. Cross fertilization allows for genetic variation, as the sperm are carrying different sets of genes into the unfertilized egg. 2. Describe how cephalization (development of a head region) is a major advantage to worms. With the development of a head, the worm is now able to evolve/develop organs that could lead to specific advantages, such as teeth, a brain, eyes, or others that would allow for better surival. 3. Sponges are typically sessile, but can move very slowly. Their structures are similar, but the worm is able to contract and extend its body in order to move. This could influence reproduction because it may be easier for an earthworm to find a mate since it has a higher motility. 4. How many body segments did the earthworm have? I had already discarded mine before answering the questions. I googled the number of segments of an earthworm and got the answer 100-150.
