a source of much of the behavior its members expressed. Each member operated as an individual, but within the family structure with its own set of rules. In the late 1950s he further developed what he called his "Family Systems Theory." Bowen believed that family members would adopt certain types of behavior based on their place in the family; with this knowledge, a therapist could grapple with behavioral issues more effectively and accurately. Frederick S. Perls – (1893-1970) Frederick S. Perls, known to his friends and colleagues as Fritz, was the co- founder with his wife Laura (1905-1990) of the Gestalt school of psychotherapy . Trained as a Freudian, Perls felt that Freud's ideas had limitations, in part because they focused on past experiences. One of the key elements of Gestalt therapy is its focus on what Perls called the "here and now." During the 1960s, Gestalt therapy gained a reputation as yet another of the "feel-good" therapeutic techniques then so common. Today, Gestalt is recognized as one of several standard approaches (often part of what is called an "eclectic" approach) to modern therapy. Virginia Satir – (1916-1988)Although Virginia Satir devoted her career to family therapy , she believed strongly in focusing on the self-worth of individuals. The family unit might be critically important, she felt, but the self-esteem of each member of the family had to come from within each person. Because of her studies, her experience based on working with thousands of families, and her instinctive understanding of family issues, she earned a reputation as a pioneer and leader in the field of family therapy Viktor Emil Frankl M.D. , Ph.D. (March 26, 1905, Czerningasse 6, Leopoldstadt , Vienna – September 2, 1997, Vienna ) was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist as well as a Holocaust survivor . Frankl was the founder of logotherapy , which is a form of Existential Analysis , the "Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy ". His best-selling book, Man's Search for Meaning chronicles his experiences as a concentration camp inmate and describes his psychotherapeutic method of finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most sordid ones, and thus a reason to continue living. Frankl was one of the key figures in existential therapy . Jacob Levy Moreno (born Bucharest , Romania , May 18, 1889; died New York , USA , May 14, 1974) was an Austrian - American leading psychiatrist and psychosociologist , thinker and educator , a Sephardi Jew born in Romania , the founder of psychodrama , and the foremost pioneer of group psychotherapy . During his lifetime, he was recognized as one of the leading social scientists . Moreno picked up where Freud left off, with his theory of interpersonal relations, and the development of his work in psychodrama, sociometry, group psychotherapy, sociodrama, and sociatry. Frank Parsons (1854-1908) is known as the Father of Vocational Guidance. Although he was educated as an engineer at Cornell University , he wrote several books on social reform movements and articles related to women's suffrage , taxation , and education for all. Additionally, he taught history, math, and French in public
