I worked at a distribution center that serviced all seven hundred stores in the east coast. We used a modified Kanban just in time system for replenishment of our inventory. For instance, when inventory at location 123A got to a certain level or was almost depleted, it triggered the system to send an online order of that particular item to the vendor. This worked as the item was received into the distribution center in time before the depletion of that item.
