Ya Boy, G III Part 2: SUBJECT: Assignment Extension? Dear Professor, I have been really sick for the past two and a half days. I think I have either a severe stomach virus or food poisoning from when I ate at Red Lobster. Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity or time to complete the article assignment that you asked for last class. Therefore, I was wondering if I could possibly have an extension for the next class. I have already completed my outline and picked out the proper resources that I will be using. I think I should be feeling a little better by the weekend to finish it up properly. I would greatly appreciate the extension. Thank you for your understanding. Sincerely, George Fountain III

Part 3: Rhetorical Context A difference in rhetorical context caused a difference in the two emails. The first email was written for a close friend of mine. Therefore, the audience was my friend. The purpose for that email was to inform him that I would not be attending the birthday party due to the stomach illness. Based on the purpose and audience of the email, I used an informal and playful genre. I used this genre because it was to my friend who I do not act that serious with and I know that I can get my point across easier when I use abbreviations and “short language.” I also did not intend on having a serious tone to my friend because I did not want him to worry about me and come over checking on me or anything. I wanted him to know that I was on top of it already. The second email was composed to my college professor (audience). The purpose for the email was to inform my professor about my illness and to ask for a weekend extension for the article assignment that was due for the upcoming class. The genre I selected for the email was formal, respectful, sincere, and genuine, and. I intended in having a formal and respectful genre because I did not want to offend the professor. By being sincere and genuine, I wanted the professor to take me seriously and to consider my request for an extension due to my current circumstances.
