European Prison Observatory Prison in Europe: overview and trends 61 Alessandro Maculan is a PhD candidate in Social Sciences at the University of Padua. His research interests focus mainly on sociology of deviance and sociology of prison (especially the work of prison officers). He also works for the Antigone's Observatory on Italian prisons. Daniela Ronco is coordinator of the National Observatory on prison conditions, carried out by Antigone and she's member of the editorial staff of the review “Antigone. Quadrimestrale di critica del sistema penale e penitenziario”. She obtained a PhD in Philosophy and Sociology of Law at the University of Turin and she is post-doctoral researcher at the University of Padua. Dr Francesca Vianello is a Lecturer in Sociology of Law at the University of Padua, Italy. She is the Scientific coordinator of the “European Prison Observatory. Detention conditions in the European Union”, teaching ‘Sociology of Deviance’ and ‘Prison Life and Convict’s Rights’ at the Sociology Degree, University of Padua. She is the author of Il carcere. Sociologia del penitenziario (Carocci, 2012), Sociologia della devianza e della criminalità (Laterza, 2010), Diritto e mediazione (Franco Angeli, 2004) and has published in several journals.
