Storage and release 1: Neuropeptides are synthesized by transcription, translation and posttranslational modifications in the cell body and axon (similar to any other protein) 2: Stored in large, dense core vesicles that are assembled in the Golgi network 3: Dense core vesicles are transported down the axon on microtubules 4: Dense core vesicles are docked outside of the active zone and are released upon large and sustained calcium entry into the cell (rapid train of action potentials) 1 2 3 4
