III. A. Zaita does certain crimes to earn income to survive. 1. Theft of golden teeth from a corpse (a). He and Dr.Booshy steel teeth from a corpse that has already been laid to rest. C.27, P.228, L.6, “He then stretched out his two cold two hands, uncovered the head of the corpse and laid bare its teeth…Then he covered the head as he found it and moved away from the corpse toward the entrance. Zaita is regarded by Mahfouz in very critical terms, as he is thought of as dirty and evil. But in reality, he is merely doing a job he can do and is actually doing that job to the fullest. The beggars he creates are cared for by and maintained by him, and he even makes sure not to make able people into cripples. And the reason he steals gold teeth from a corpse is that he requires the income to live and pay for the rent for Husniya. Zaita is merely portrayed as evil, but his actions give insight into what he is actually doing, which is surviving through whatever means necessary.
