South, Southern delegates were successful in protecting slavery and they were not ashamed of owning slaves by justifying by the example of all the world such as ancient cities having slaves. Also in the Convention, people spoke about slaves as “Negroes” tying the race to slavery. Even though North had abolished slavery by early 19thcentury, North and South agreed to make changes to the constitution that pleased both sides such as creating three-fifth clause, slave trade clause, and fugitive slave clause that further preserved slavery and gave South bigger political power. This means that the North was not trying to end slavery but be with the good terms with the South. These all are the examples of slavery that led to the American race relations.1

JamshidovThe author of this reading points out many different examples of how the proslavery constitution shaped American race relations. I agree with the author’s points because the race relations were created because slavery existed in the United States for a very long time and it created a separation between blacks and whites. Because no white person was a slave many whites saw African Americans as slaves and they tied slavery to the African American race. This might be the reason of racial relations in the United States. From this reading, I learned few things that I did not know before. One thing that I have learned is that in the Constitutional Convention, North and South created clauses that further preserved slavery in the South. instead of going against South, North was negotiating with the South. Another thing that I learned is that after the banning of Atlantic Slave trade, Virginia had more slaves than it needed and started trading slaves with other states. 2
