If a company completely ignore this technology, meaning, ignoring Shopify and similar competitors, the company would suffer. Many consumers browse selections online before purchasing in a store. So, if a retail business didn’t have a website with their products, a large portion of their potential market wouldn’t even know about the store’s existence. This article outlines the motivation and the justification for Shopify branching to brick and mortar stores. The article explains recent criticism for reliance on small merchants and their minimal retention rate on those merchants. Although, COO, Harvey Finkelstein, retorts these assumptions with the understanding that "some businesses don't succeed" but their customers that do, continue to be successful. The purpose of the new retail location is to provide information to those wanting to collaborate and a retail location for clients to communicate with their customers. This is how Shopify hopes to combat the largest barrier for e-commerce companies: combatting consumers wanting to view the product before purchase. Currently, online platforms are being chosen for primary method of sales because of convenience, reach, and data collection on consumers (Burleton, 2018). Additionally, there are many additional costs for opening a retail location, such as rent commitments, on floor merchandise, and set up and retail costs (Wang, 2016). Shopify is offering a method for those who are not financially capable of investing in a brick and mortar store, by providing clients a physical location to reach their customers.
