South Vietnam. In 1960, a front known as the front liberation came out to challenge the government of South Vietnam. This led to the eruption of a civil war to control the south while the north sought to bring the country together under its socialist leadership (McMahon). This civil war started deep with the United States committed to prevent the socialists from over running South Vietnam. The rising involvement of the United States was fueled by the reason of domino theory which opposed that the falling of one nation to socialism would lead in other neighboring nations submitting to socialism considerably as one toppled domino would take down others in a row. As a way to contain the situation, George Kennan forced the United States to do everything that was in their power to avoid the spread of the socialism. The officials of United States believed that if the southern Vietnam fell into socialism, so would the neighboring nations of Malaysia,

The main attitude and mindset why the US got involved in the Vietnam quagmire was because it did not want another nation to go to socialism and thus the Soviet circle of influence after what had happened in China. After the breaking of the civil war in 1960 by the national liberation front, john F. Kennedy and his administration expanded the support of the United States to Vietnam government in 1961. This support entailed the increase of military advisers from United States to Vietnam, multiplying the military aid and authorizing the use of defoliants, herbicides and napalm. Even though the huge increase of the military advisors was done by john F. Kennedy, the real increase came under the presidency of Johnson. Many factors could have contributed to the effect of the increase being felt under the leadership of Johnson. One of the main reasons that made the real increase come under Johnson is that Johnson positioned the foundation for the full scale military commitment of United States to Vietnam. Johnson asked the congress to authorize the use of military force after Vietnam attacked United States destroyers in the Tonkin Gulf. This led to the Tonkin gulf resolution.
