restraints or having suicidal thoughts. Also some psych patient’s need more care as their hallucinations are making them violent or act out. We give more care to the one patient’s then the other nine and they see that they are not getting the care they need. The closed system would be the managers giving us one RN to up to 10 patients. Recently we had one RN to seven patients, some of the personal care assistants were sent home. The manager only looked at numbers and not the care needed for each patient. Systems of rules and procedures need to be in place for dealing with different work situations (Marquis & Huston, 2015). One rule might work for one night but not the next night, there needs to be flexibility. To make this a closed to open system, the nurse manager needs to branch out to the division manager who is also in charge of medical surgical units. The manager needs feedback on how other units determine the care needed and when it is appropriate to increase the staffing to properly care for the patients, this is using external feedback to make care of our patient’s safe and effective (Meyer & O’Brien-Pallas, 2010). This is giving exceptional care that our mission statements value. ReferenceMarquis, B. L., & Huston, C. J. (2015). Leadership Roles and Management Functions in Nursing(8th Ed.). Wellah, staffing has always stood out as a major problem in the healthcare field. I truly believe many healthcare organizations have issues with appropriate nurse staffing. The application example in the Meyer and O’Brien-Pallas (2010) article suggest how a hospital uses “buffers inventories” or float pool and travel nurses to staff their floors. My facility uses a float pool, intercorporate travel nurses, and several contracted travel agencies to make sure the hospital is fully staffed with nurses.ReferencesMeyer, R. M., & O’Brien-Pallas, L. WEEKLY DISCUSSIONS8The development of nursing practice through the years, with the combination of modern technology, had brought about the use of the different systems theory. Even Florence Nightingalein 1860 had mentioned definitions of nursing that is consequential to the development of the subsystems that encounter some actual and perceived problems. According to Johnson, Miller, and Horowitz (2008), a system-based practice can also be utilized as an analytical tool that can assist in making change efforts and caregiving more successful. Highlighted by Marquis and Huston (2015) are some of the contributing factors that lead to problems at a nursing department and unit levels such contemporary health reforms, rising cost of healthcare, shortage of workforce, and increasing technologies. An effective leader is primal in addressing the critical issues and concerns that considerably will influence the workflow of the organization.
