4. What sport do you think has the most potential to help entrepreneurs better identify business opportunities and grow their firms? Once again, responses will vary depending on a number of individual experiences and preferences. One possible response might be that the individual sports have the most potential to help entrepreneurs because of the similarity that, in either case, to a large extent your success depends on your own skills and abilities and has little to do with others’ performance. 189

Chapter 12: Leading in a Dynamic Environment VIDEO GUIDE 1 The Buffalo Zoo—Leading in a Dynamic Environment Instructor’s Notes: When hired as President and CEO of the Buffalo Zoo, Dr. Donna Fernandes was warned of the resistance she’d face from several sources including the Zoo employees who had been alienated by earlier Zoo Presidents’ autocratic styles. In her first few years, Donna has gained Board and community support and her employees share her vision, enthusiastically carrying out her initiatives. Discussion Questions and Suggested Answers: 1. Explain how Fernandes illustrates the traits of successful leaders. The following illustrate the traits of successful leaders possessed by Fernandes: Drive (that is, achievement, sense of responsibility, ambition, energy, tenacity, and initiative): Fernandes always wanted to be a zoo President, so she obtained the appropriate schooling and experience to qualify for the job. All of these were illustrated when she shared with the board her vision for the Buffalo Zoo to regain its world class status in 10-25 years. She persisted even though she was warned of the strong resistance she’d face from the surrounding community, influential community members, board members who had their own visions for the zoo’s future, and the anti-management employees. Motivation (especially power): She’s highly motivated to make a difference because she walks the Zoo grounds daily interacting with employees and Zoo visitors. She empowers her employees to make decisions and supports their efforts. Fernandes’ employees report they feel like they’re working with her rather than for her. Darryl Hoffman, an elephant keeper, said: “She’s very ambitious, very motivated - she wants to see things change and make a difference. I think that’s great.” Business knowledge: She has an MBA and extensive experience in zoo management. The chair of the zoo’s board recalled “The first time we met Donna, we saw …a real depth and background in the zoo world…” 2. What additional characteristics and achievements may contribute to her success as President and CEO? She illustrates the 3Cs. For example, she demonstrates Competence because she developed a vision that was correct for the Zoo and was inspiring to the people in the organization. She also illustrates all of the other elements of competence noted in this chapter. She also demonstrates Character because she elicits trust, commitment, and followership through her integrity, honesty, high ethical standards, courage, discipline, and persistence. Finally, 1 Case and teaching note prepared by Cynthia Sutton, Metropolitan State College of Denver.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
