Most serious charge was that American women were, by nature, promiscuous o When a relative was on friendly terms with an American woman, it was  assumed that their intentions toward each other were dishonorable Foregone conclusion than an American wife could not possibly be  faithful to her husband for long  o Marriages with Americans were so rate that whenever a relative married  one he was henceforth known as ‘the-one-who-married-the-American’ Apart from the prejudices they had about Americans, one of their  strongest objections to marriage with them was that they believed  in divorce Divorce horrified his relatives—marriage was something willed by  God, and to break up a marriage was to go against the will of God  American morals bewildered relatives o Sicily—rules of conduct were well defined and strict but fairly simple to  follow Same rules had been used for many centuries and were known to  everyone o In America, there were many different kinds of people and no rules that  were taken seriously Everything seemed to conspire toward the breakdown of the rules  they had brought with them o American women could work in factories without being considered  strafalarii Men and women could walk down the street together  Children picked up strange American ideas about courtship and  marriage—could become engaged without using their parents as  intermediaries or their permission  Chapter 9: Children were allowed to listen to all family discussions as long as they did not  interrupt o Things were not kept from the children—there was no effort to ‘protect’  them from the Facts of Life or the scandals of relatives  Didn’t spell words out loud so children could not understand
