that of my peers at other top tier firms. It is not at all uncommon for first year associates at Irell to take depositions, argue motions, and/or examine witnesses at trial.” • “I’ve been given a lot of responsibility early on which is what I was looking for. Of course there are day-to-day tasks that need to be done, but I’ve also gotten the chance to draft briefs, work with experts, and attend client calls and much more.” Training & Mentoring • “Early responsibility is part of the firm culture. The formal mentoring and training is somewhat minimal; there is not much hand-holding. Rather, associates seem to learn by experience.” • “First years are given a series of formal training sessions, but most of the learning is done on-the-job. It’s a lot of learning by doing—and sometimes learning from your mistakes (although the partners and senior associates are very understanding about that). The firm has both assigned mentors and various lunch/social programs to help you find unofficial mentors, which is nice. Because it’s a small firm and everyone is fairly busy, it’s often on a junior associate’s shoulders to be proactive and reach out to ask for mentoring, but folks are receptive when you do. The firm hasn’t quite caught on to the sponsorship thing yet, but it’s something that the partners are starting to become aware of.” • “New associates have a weekend-long orientation in Palm Springs towards the beginning of their first year. The firm puts on weekly lunches starting in January for all new litigation associates covering helpful topics, and includes a two-day deposition training. In terms of mentoring and informal training, since you work directly with the partners, you get to receive helpful feedback frequently.” • “Firm has a lot of formal teaching lunches, where attorneys present on all aspects of the law and litigation, which are often very helpful.” Career Outlook • “I think my career outlook is good; the firm is doing well, and the firm has been receptive to those who work hard. But the firm is a meritocracy—if you want to make it to the top, you have to be very good.”

487 Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms, 2018 Edition IRELL & MANELLA LLP • “Irell typically makes about one associate a year partner—so partnership is possible, even if not guaranteed for everyone. Many leave between third and fifth year to go in-house, move to a smaller firm, etc. That said, Irell gives you such great experience that, if you’re happy doing the work, there’s no reason not to stick around but if you ever do decide to leave, Irell positions you as a strong candidate for wherever you want to go next.” • “Partnership is realistic for those who really want it and are willing to work for it. For those who don’t make partner, Irell does have a small number of counsel roles. A huge advantage of working at Irell, though, is that you will have plenty of exit opportunities—other firms and in-house counsel recognize that Irell lawyers receive top-notch training.”

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
