Many have asked for them to be let back in but the USA hates them and wouldn’t let that happen o All democratic nations and it works everywhere except Cuba o Commonality – they are in the same boat because of geography and the common ideology A shared culture of ideas in the Americas Democracy/individual human rights and freedoms o This entity aspires to do more collaboratively o They want to strengthen democracy o Disclaimer  you are increasingly seeing a move from the Latin Americans to start their own OAS without USA or Canada US is slipping away from super power status so regional powers are rising and the Latin Americans are increasingly wanting to stand up with their own voice Kind of what he suggested with MERCORSUR as well African Union o It is the 2 nd largest organization right after the UN who has everyone in the world in it o It has 53 members – the entire African continent except Morocco due to the territorial dispute o These guys have been trying to form something since the independence movement back in the 1960’s o They started out, and failed, with the Union of African States in the 1960’s A few decades later they formed the African Unity This turned into African Economic Community in the 1980’s and it just never did much o They are poor so poor people don’t buy a lot of stuff or buy a lot of stuff from each other; they don’t trade much with each other o Renewed interest in the 1990’s to rejuvenate this thing

Muammar Gaddafi was one of the motivating forces behind this right when he decided he didn’t want to be a part of the Arab league o 2002 – relaunched African Union and picked this to mimic the EU o Objectives  accelerate the political, social, and economic integration of the entire continent, promote and defend African common interests, to combat disease, corruption, and poverty, to achieve peace and security, to promote democratic government and human rights This is an awesome shopping list but Africa doesn’t have any of these things It’s hard to see how anything has gotten better since the reintroduction Probably will not get better anytime soon Endemic poverty and rampant disease, chronic corruption as a whole (bad governance) Everyone just wants to keep their head above water They’re not trying to sit around and figure out how they can work together better as a whole They don’t have this luxury or this capital o There is talk of common trade area, common currency, etc. but they cannot check out o 1 exception – common military Because it had already kind of started They have a lot of problems down in Africa and they decided they should have a common group to solve the problems of Africa without relying on others to come solve the problems

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
